Driving STEM Learning Through Business Engagement

STEM City works with all businesses, government agencies and non-profits to grow a more STEM-literate community, and develop a more STEM-capable workforce.
Here is how you and your business can help our efforts:
  • Designate a person at your business/agency as the Outreach Coordinator for schools to contact about potential outreach activities. Please share this contact information with the Flagstaff STEM Coordinator.
  • Sign up for the STEM Community E-letter that celebrates business engagement in STEM and provides volunteer opportunities for you and your employees.
  • Participate in the Full STEAM Ahead program.
  • Host field trips or tours of your company.
  • Provide internships / job shadowing for students. Especially needed in bioscience for the iCREATE program.
  • Provide summer internships for teachers through the Teachers in Industry program.
  • Develop real-world projects for students. PBL's or Project-based Learning is a great way to incorporate relevant STEM!
  • Support student research projects and/or community service projects.
  • Participate in the Flagstaff Community STEM Celebration.
  • Participate in the Flagstaff Festival of Science.
  • Adopt a local school and provide financial support for STEM activities at the school.
  • Provide financial support for a local school's STEM, robotics, chess, or math club.
Not sure you feel prepared to engage? Change the Equation, a non-profit group working at the intersection of business and education, has a clear challenge for Arizona. While job growth in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields is growing more quickly in Arizona than in almost all other states, business leaders in Arizona cannot find the STEM talent they need to stay competitive. They also have many resources at their website including this guide to providing Work-Based Learning for K-12 Students at your business.

STEM Business Advocates are encouraged to register with the Science Foundation Arizona STEM Advocates program. The SFAz STEM Network is building a database of all the businesses involved in Arizona STEM activities. They are working to match schools and businesses with each other, but you can list the school(s) you are already working with in Flagstaff.
